This tool is very impressive and not a toy as some others may be.If Jet keeps this type of quality in workmanship going and the costs down, the competition will be blown away.The first thing that impressed me was the weight.You will need two adults to get it out of the box and without a mobile base this unit will stay parked in the shop. The fininh was well done and it looks like a tool that will last a life time. Assembly was a snap and the instructions were well written.I could not believe how quiet this unit runs and without vibration !I also like the idea of one dust port for both ends of the tool. I have another Jet product and I noticed if there is anything I could say in the negative sense is the 90/45 deg. stops could be better. This would not change my mind about the unit ,it's just an observation that needs a mention.I really don't think anyone would be dissapointed with the purchase of this one ! Good Job Jet!

Hitachi SB8V2 3-Inch-by-21-Inch Variable Speed Belt Sander Review

I love this mid sized belt sander. I am a contractor so I know about tools. Every tool has a specific purpose and this sander fits in perfectly for what I need it to do. 9 amps is allot of power for a sander and thankfully this one has the variable speed. The variable speed switch is nicely located so that you can adjust the speed with your pinky finger while not taking your hands off the sander. The weight of this machine was actually less than what I was expecting. I have a larger 12 amp Bosch sander and was expecting this belt sander to weigh in closer to that, but it doesn't. This sander actually feels much lighter than the Porter Cable 352VS that this Hitachi is replacing. (On a side note, why is all of my loved Porter Cable tools turning into junk? Hopefully now that Stanely owns PC it will go back to normal.)This sander is made in Malaysia so it is not the norm China junk. The rubber grips are nice, belt tracking stays put for about forever, and the bushings are simple to replace, as it is on most Hitachi tools.
This is only my 2nd Hitachi tool, besides air nailers which is a given if you buy PRO grade tools. All of my cordless tools are Milwaukee, and then everything with a cord is either Milwaukee, Porter Cable, Bosch, and Makita. I have not owned any Black & Decker or Craftsman tools since I was a kid (yes, those are kid tools and should never be purchased except Craftsman for mechanics tools. The other reviewers of this tool I would disregard! I did read their reviews before deciding to purchase this sander. One complaint was that the motor was on the left side. Are you kidding me??? The reason why the dust collection is on the left side is to allow you to actually sand right up against something at a 90 degree angle! That is what a belt sander should do, it is a requirement, and it is more expensive to configure that tool to do so. Another person complained about the fact that this excellent sander will not fit under kitchen cabinets. Again, please disregard. If you buy a larger mid sized sander, which this is, it is because you need to do some quick heavy sanding. You should have other sanders for getting into small tight spots because larger sanders will not fit there because they are big and powerful. This is why I have a 1/4 sheet Bosch sander, a 5" random orbital Milwaukee, the small hand held Porter Cable belt sander, this Hitachi, and my larger Bosch belt sander. Buy a specific tool to do a specific job, learn how to use the tool to the fullest of its capabilities, buy the highest quality tools,and you will end up with professional results. With the fact that this belt sander has easily replaceable brushes lets me know, as a pro, that I can keep this sander running for years without much downtime. I wish other manufacturers would be so thoughtful as this.
Oh ya, one more thing. The dust collection actually works on this belt sander! This belt sander is a steal for under $200! Sorry about the rant but I hate it when someone gives a great tool a low star because they bought something without thinking about it first. I was reading the reviews on nail guns and can you believe that a guy gave a framing nailer a one star because he was angry at the fact that the nailer would not work without being hooked up to an air compressor! Maybe he has bought some tools in the past that run on pixie dust but my need either electric, batteries, gas, or air in order to perform their function. So if you need a larger mid sized belt sander, this one works perfectly.

Ridgid EB4424 14663 5 Amp Oscillating Edge Belt/Spindle Sander Review

I researched spindle sanders for about a week or so before making a decision to buy the Ridgid EB4424. I liked the idea that it is "multi-purpose" - functioning both as a spindle sander and a belt sander with a tilt table. I couldn't find anything else that offered all the features that the Rigid does, and the $250 price seemed too good to be true (most other spindle sanders cost more, sometimes MUCH more, but with fewer features). I almost didn't buy it because of the low price (made me somewhat suspicious). However, I have other Ridgid products and they have been very reliable.

Shopping the web for pricing, I ran across a great deal...new units for $199, but also found factory reconditioned units priced even lower than that. I decided to take a gamble and order a factory reconditioned unit and paid only $150! Figured if I didn't like it, or if the recon didn't work properly, I could return it. Thankfully, I found it works perfectly and it has found a permanent home in my workshop!

Upon opening the box, the interior packaging looked brand-spanking new and everything inside it was in new condition. No sign at all that this was a recon unit. (The only clue that it was reconditioned was the owner's manual had "Reconditioned Unit One-Year Warranty" printed on the cover.)

Set-up is minimal and simple. When I checked the adjustable table-half to see if it was level in relation to the stationary table-half, I found the table did not need any adjustment whatsoever! The only adjustments I made was to the Allen screws under where the orange plastic spindle table insert fits into. Easy, 2 minute job. Ridgid even includes the 3/32" Allen wrench. They thought of everything it seems.

I've used it now for 8 months (purchased Feb. 2009), and I couldn't be more pleased. I use the belt-sander attachment to true-up miter joints, straight joints, and general "flat" sanding tasks for small boxes and the like. Swapping out the belt sander attachment to convert to a spindle sander takes less than a minute.

Of course, the oscillating/rotary spindle is the main reason I bought the unit and it has exceeded my expectations. The motor has plenty of "oomph" and makes quick work of sanding the interior and exterior sections of curved wood cutouts and so on. I really enjoy how Rigid designed the entire unit. The built-in storage keeps all the accessories and attachments neatly stowed and is very handy indeed!

I consider the Ridgid EB4424 a bargain at any price. You get 2 tools in one and the unit performs better than advertised. If you've been thinking about adding a spindle sander to your workshop, I think you will be well-pleased choosing the EB4424!

EDIT: I just noticed (Oct. 25, 2009)that in the EB4424 product description posted on Amazon.com shows the unit weighs 300 pounds! NO - not so! It weighs just over 40 pounds is all.

JET 708597K JSG-96CS 9-Inch/6-Inch 3/4 Horsepower Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1 Phase Review

Don't get me wrong here, this is a real good machine. Very heavily built, excellant finish, and very quiet. The dust collection is great, it has plenty of power and tracks well. But I had to return it and replace it with the Shop Fox G4790(see separate review). There were a couple of reasons for this. First you cannot remove the end piece from the belt sander and sand on the radius. This piece is an intregal part of the tracking system and must remain on the machine when sanding. I need a machine that I can sand/shape large radius on. Second..I need a machine that I can quickly change belts, as I will go thru 4-5 differant grits in a 10 minute period. Changing the belt on this machine involves removing parts...too slow. The last item was the casters...they should be heavier duty. If I had kept the machine I would have changed them out for Gizzly 3" locking casters.
If none of these are important to your use, I would recommend this sander. It's a nice machine and I wish I could have kept it.

Milwaukee 6021-21 Random Orbit Palm Sander with dust collection bag Review

The 5yr warranty and extra sanding disk plus a case make this sander a great value. This sander runs very smooth and quiet compared to the sander being replaced. The switch is located properly varaible speed dial is smooth. Very important my hand doesn't cover the upper motor vents when operating it to prevent overheating the motor. Unfortunately some of the other sanders were designed poorly.
The dust bag connector is designed better and is more secure than other brands that vibrate loose. It's not difficult to remove either. My vacuum hose fits well on the sander too. (My vac fitting is rubber.)
I read physically compared the comfort and design of many random orbital sanders in stores. I read reviews and complaints about many sanders. Most complaints were about vibration, poor quality dust cannisters/bags.
Finally I decided to read the sanders specs, warranties, weight, amperage for effeciency, orbit size myself. I even looked at parts breakdown of each sander to avoid expensive repairs resulting from complicated designs. I read somewhere that heat eventually destroys hook & loop. Most replacement pads cost $20-$30 depending on Mfg. I will prob use PSA discs since they can be a bit cheaper and buy a favorite backup pad before sander models change.

Proxxon 38536 BSL 115/E Belt Sander Review

I have had the sander for a couple of years and really like it's size, handling ease, and ability to rotate the head.However, the internal bevel gear apparently stripped after very few hours of light duty.It's not obvious how to get the head off to order the right part.The Proxxon service center says to read the manual to get the part number, but lost the manual.None available on the web site.If the noise was less and service better, I would rate it a 5

Powermatic 1791291K Model 31A 6-Inch/12-Inch 1-1/2 Horsepower Belt/Disc Sander, 115/230-Volt 1 Phase Review

The Powermatic 31A Belt/Disc sander makes an impressive addition to any shop that already has a working machine.The unit is sturdy and good looking.The two heavy tables are esily adjusted and the T-miter slots were a nice surprise. It even comes with a small gauge, belt and disc.The belt moves smooth and easily when propelled by hand, and the disc appears true.The belt tension mechanism is quick and accessible. Despite being in the shop for over a month, an assessment of finishing quality has yet to be made. Upon initial start-up, noise and vibration were excessive.The motor overheated, tripping 20 amp breaker.Confirmed the motor was factory wired for 115V.The motor subsequently fails to wind up and cannot drive the belt/disc shaft.
Powermatic was contacted about the defective motor.The Customer Service Representative was polite, but advised that it was Amazon.com's problem, warranted or not.Amazon.com has made a good faith effort to provide a functioning tool. But a new motor was incompatible with the tool power drive and new drive component, likewise, incompatible with said motor.Offered to return everything.Still waiting for instruction on return, repairing original motor or obtaining correct drive components for new motor that will not void warantee. The good folk at Amazon.com appear ill equipped to deal with Powermatic, and Powermatic doesn't want to deal with end user.
Summary:Nice looking tool, doesn't work. Buy a Delta from different source.

This belt sander fully meets my needs. I'm into making segmented bowls, and use this machine to flatten the segments for final glueing. Assembly of the machine was easy, and the belt adjusts accurately. Using the belt in either horizonal or vertical position is a convenient feature. The sander comes with a sturdy steel open base, which wasn't mentioned in the Amazon write-up. I replaced the casters with with lockable wheels to make the sander mobile in my small shop.

Woodstock D1251 4-Inch by 36-Inch 100 Grit Aluminum Oxide Sanding Belt, 2-Pack Review

These are what they are and they do work - but one strange thing I have noticed is that these seem much more prone to wandering than previous belts I have used on my sander.They seem to become more stable after they have been mounted for a few days.

My shop is cold, so it may be that the fabric in the belt is excessively stiff when cold, and therefore the belt is reluctant to take the set of the pulleys in the sander.

Unit was shipped incredibly fast. Looked pretty good initially, but as I put it together, I noted a few annoying problems. This is a refurb unit. I understand that. I ignored the few surface blemishes. The first issue is the condition of the power cord. The insulation was chewed up fairly severely by what looked like the sander itself. It looks like the original purchaser was careless about making sure the cord stayed away from the moving sanding belt or sanding disk. In refurbing the unit, CPO should have replaced the cord. The other issue was a fit and finish issue. the instruction manual strongly advised that the wrk surface be installed not less than 1/16 inch from the disk sanding unit. This is not possible because the mount doesn't allow the work surface to be exactly aligned to the sanding disk face. At one point it can have a 1/16" gap, but at the other end the gap is 1/8". Finally, I couldn't get the work fence for the belt sander to clear the sanding belt. The belt would contact the fence slightly until I ground open the bolt slot a bit to allow a little adjustment. Those relatively small issues aside, the sander works well. If it holds up, I'll be a happy customer.

I recently finished off 1300 SF of 48 year old red oak floors. Lots of damage here and there, especially water-caused problems. I rented a drum sander for the big expanses, and bought this model for closets, edges, and "tight" areas.

Excellent, excellent tool. Really powerful, too, so you have to maintain a firm grip. I have four Makita small power tools, including a pad sander, jigsaw, and cordless drill. Makita is my favorite brand for smaller power tools (I'm a Milwaukee guy on the bigger ones).

Makita 9924DB 7.8 Amp 3-Inch by 24-Inch Belt Sander with Cloth Dust Bag Review

Just received this sander today & it's heading back.When I took it out of the box, my initial reaction was that it had mistakenly had a 4" platen installed instead of the proper 3". It turns out that is the way it's "supposed" to be.
To me it seems like this is a cheap fix, since the motor extends out past the belt's normal tracking location.The extra wide platen allows the user to adjust the belt over so that you can sand flush to corners. In the process, the belt is partially off of the drive rolls (25% is off the rolls). It seems like this would shorten belt life, when used in this mode. When the belt is tracked in its normal path, the extra platen is sticking out where it will bump into anything that comes near. (Note that the sander picture show the item from the drive side where this "feature" is not visible.)
The dust bag port is rectangular, so have fun hooking up a vacuum to this one.The dust bag seems lighter weight than on other sanders I have. Obviously I haven't used it, so can't comment on power and other usability factors. I'll be getting another brand of sander.

The Bosch 1276DVS offers solid, reliable performance plus a few nifty extras, making it an easy-to-use sander that's serious about removing material. Bosch designers listened to customer feedback and developed a front handle that adjusts. Deep detents mean the handle snaps securely into place, giving it a burly feel and stability in any of the six positions. That, combined with nice balance and weight, minimizes user fatigue. Like many of the sanders in this class, the motor is aligned with the belt edge to make flush sanding possible; however, as with other Bosch belt sanders, visibility is somewhat limited once the sander gets into corners.
The belt-changing system works well--we didn't suffer any spring pinches--and the belt tracking adjustment tracks the new belt quickly and keeps it in place. The 1276 gets its "dustless" name from the adjustable shoot that accommodates nonwoven belts up to 8 mm thick. Belt sanders are all about removing stock in a hurry, and the larger the area of sandpaper in contact with material, the faster material is removed. To achieve a perfect finish, it's important that the sander sand flat. The platen on the 1276 is the cork-and-steel type, not as efficient as cast aluminum, but a good, solid performance setup. Plus, the 1276 offers an optional graphite platen--a great high-performance extra. There are a few other accessories available and we liked the sanding stand, which holds the tool in an inverted position for fine finish applications, and the machined-aluminum sanding frame that keeps the sander up off material, reducing pressure on the belt and making smooth finishes easier. I am a contractor who recently started my own business and have been buying a lot of tools.I used the Porter Cable belt sander before and loved it but figured DeWalt was great brand so I bought this sander.In as few words as possible; I hate it!I mean I really do not like using it and here's why:

Cons
-Belt tracking doesn't work and I am constantly watching it instead of my work to make sure the belt doesn't work its way to one side and shred itself.I have had many belts get shredded and as a result damaged the wood I was sanding.
-Dust collector is poorly attached; bag falls off too easily causing dust to blow everywhere in a matter of seconds.
-Dust collection system gets clogged and I find I have to constantly blow it clean with a compressor.
-Comes in a ridiculously HUGE case.It's great if you bought the stand with it (unlike me) since there's room for it.It's so big I also keep a palm sander, 2 8" quick clamps and a lot of extra belts (you'll need them).Pros
-The only pro I can think of is that it looks cool.

Porter-Cable 363 12 Amp 4-Inch by 24-Inch Belt Sander Review

I had bought the Porter Cable 4" Whisper Series Model 362 about a year ago. It is the same unit as this one, same 12 amp motor etc, but has the dust bag with it, and is variable speed. You can see the 362VS here at Amazon. For the price difference I would buy the 362VS. I had written this review, thinking that this was the model that I had, after looking at the model number on the sander, I realized it was a 362. Consequently I wrote this review first, then copy and pasted the review into the 362VS. So if you see the same review, you know why. For the sake of interest, I am letting this review stand. Here it is:
I previously used a 3x21" Sears. Did the job, but this PC is in a whole different category. Some of the more important features: Positive tracking-when you set the belt adjusting knob, the belt stays adjusted. Some belt sanders creep on you, and require frequent resetting. Annoying to say the least. Also the belt change feature is nice. A simple lever you pull out, then push back in. Quiet-you do not have to wear ear protection to use this. Hearing protection is always a good idea though. It is heavy, but to me this is an advantage. You don't have to push down on the unit, in order to get the job done. To those who mention that you have to keep an eye on the machine, because it can take away too much material too fast, that is because they are using a coarser grit than it required for the task. Finer grades give you more flexibility, and removal is more gradual and even. A belt sander is not designed to replace a finish sander.
With the larger 4" footprint, it is possible to remove a lot of material fast, without digging troughs in the work, which is possible with many belt sanders. Troughs-ridges show in the finished product. For fine finishes that are even and flat, a dedicated planer, then a finish sander, and finally a fine grade of hand sanding will give you the desired result.
The Porter Cable 4" is the best belt sander I have ever used. I would not hesitate to take on a floor refinishing task with this unit. If I was doing it for a living, I would of course persue a walk behind.
This is a no nonsense sander. Heavy duty. Lay it on the board, and hold on. Makes short of a lot of work. Feels like it will last a lifetime. Definitely a leader in the pack, and worth the money.

Hitachi SB10YI 4- by 8-Inch Belt Disc Sander with Dust Collection Review

This isa basic tool, but nevertheless very functional.Here's the scoop:

Good:
1.Smooth running belt with easy to use and effective tensioner and tracking adjuster.
2.Flat disk platen with very little runout.Workpiece does not dance around when sanding with the disk.
3.Effective dust collection.
4.Sturdy cast iron table that can be moved between the disk and belt.The table is ground really flat, and has a nice look to it.It also has a very decent angle adjustment for bevel sanding.
5.The machine delivers completely satisfactory results.
6.The price is right.

Bad:
1.Stamped steel housing (rather than cast iron).It took me by surprise, but I can't say that the base suffers a lot from being stamped steel.
2.Cheesy plastic miter gage.I'd be embarrassed about this gage if I were a Hitachi Rep.The good news here is that I almost never use a miter gage on a sander.
3.Too much plastic.This may not be a functional problem (the jury is still out), but I don't like the looks of it.There appears to be no plastic used for structural parts - just on guards and such.

My overall impression is positive.This is a nice but basic sander that does everything a sander should.I will keep it and I think be happy with it.Hitachi's warranty is for 1 year.

Update at 1 year:Still happy.The dust collection works better than expected.No breakage.No problems.

Ridgid R2740 28533 Sander, 3-Inch x 18-Inch Belt Review

I had high hopes for this sander.I picked it up at the local big box store, took it home and put it to work immediately sanding a really crappy texture job that the previous owner of my home applied.At first, I was really happy with this sander.It had adequate power, good ergonomics, light weight, good belt tracking and effective dust collection.The only misgiving I had was that it seemed to have an excessive amount of plastic.Therefore my initial impressions were good.However, after about 3~4 hours, the belt started slowing down.A couple of minutes later the motor started sparking excessively, and shortly thereafter caught fire.Are you kidding me?Sanding drywall texure burned this thing up?Heavy duty my a$$!This thing sucks!

Made in China, but no surprise there.Thankfully, Ridgid has a lifetime guarantee and a thirty day return policy.It may make you feel better about the purchase, but a guaranteed piece of crap is still a piece of crap.

After trying several belt sanders on the market, I was extremely happy to come across this one.For starters, it never bogs down. No matter how much pressure is put on the platen or how long it runs, the motor never bogs.That was the main problem with other belt sanders I have used.
The sander also has some heft to it.It is not a light weight machine.This is good because it doesn't need a lot of extra force to remove a lot of stock, and the weight helps to keep it on track.If weight is a concern for you, you need to look elsewhere.Although the "elsewhere" sanders won't work as well!
This sander is tough.I was sanding a faceframe one day when my partner accidentally unplugged the machine.I set the machine down (this part is embarrassing) forgetting to turn the trigger off.When I plugged it back in, it pulled itself across the bench and onto the floor before I realized what was happening.It bounced a couple of times and continued across the floor before pulling the plug from the outlet.It purrs like a lion to this day.There has been other times when it has been dropped or stepped on and has never had any problems.
The only drawback, and the reason I gave it only 4 stars, is the dust bag.It gets in the way sometimes when working on other than horizontal surfaces.It can be swung around, though, to the left or right out of the way.Also, the dust bag forms a rub hole, right at the top where the aluminum tube ends inside the bag.I've sealed it with clear silicone which works fine.

Grizzly G0547 Combo Sander 4" x 36" Belt 6" Disc Review

I had always wanted a combination belt/disc sander for its versatility and convenience, yet never seemed to want to spend the money to get one.When I saw this little machine come on the market, at this price, I thought it was the perfect solution for my small home shop.Besides price, this unit has a lot going for it.It is compact yet sturdy (the base is cast iron)
and for its size, it is powerful enough to do anything I would ask of it.As an added bonus, the manual provided by Grizzly was absolutely excellent!All of the set-up instructions were clear and accurate.Now for the downside...I realize that you get what you pay for, but there are several things which bother me about this tool.First, the "miter gauge" included for use with the disc sanding table is a joke.It is cheaply made and mine is not square.Second, the motor turns the sanding surfaces at 3450 rpms.This is way too fast for a lot of the sanding you may want to do with this machine.If you research it a bit you will find that most of the better quality belt/disc combo machines have motors that turn at 1725 rpms.
All in all, this little machine is worth the price but I can't help thinking that with a little more time in the design phase, this tool could have been great.If you are on a very tight budget and find yourself in need of this type of sander then don't hesitate.Otherwise, spend a little more and get some high end features.
