I rec'd the sander a few days ago. It went together easy. It was quite heavy. Unless you've got some muscles, get some help placing the sander body on the stand.
The stand is solid and doesn't take up much floor space. There are pre-drilled carriage-bolt holes in the legs if you want to add your own lower shelf. I plan to do that at a later date but I thought it would be nice if Jet included the horizontal supports for such a shelf with the stand. Not a big negative just a suggestion. The stand comes with rubber-cushioned leveling feet unlike some of the other stands I've purchased in the past. It was a nice touch.
Other than the stand, essentially the only assembly needed is to attach the work tables to the sander body. The instructions are pretty good and they show in some detail how you get the tables lined up square to the sanding surfaces. I had a little trouble getting the belt sander work surface to go on smoothly but after making some adjustments to the 90 degree stops, it seemed to go on more easily.
The unit runs smoothly and with about as much noise as I would expect with a sander, although the graphite belt sander platen seems to make a little more "whooshing" sound when it starts up. The graphite is supposed to make it run cooler. I haven't confirmed that but it makes sense. There aren't any undue vibrations. Not having owned a stationary belt sander before this one (but I have used several) releasing the belt tension was new for me but makes sense. It's recommended so the belt doesn't take on an excessively oval shape or wear out prematurely. It's easy to do but I find that I have to line up the belt on the rollers before I move the tension arm back. Easy to do, just something to remember if you plan to release the tension when the machine is off.
The belt sander will lay flat if you need to do some surface sanding. There's a horizontal stop but no vertical stop. However, eyeball vertical is fine since the work surface moves with the belt assembly and as such stays perpendicular.
The disc sander is great for me. 9 inche diameter is all I need. I've considered 12 inch disc sanders but this machine gets the job done. I build furniture, cabinets and various (larger) craft items and I expect that it will handle my needs.
Adjusting the work surfaces requires some patience but wasn't too difficult. For example, if you want to change the angle on the belt sander work surface, you need to loosen two locking handles and line up the angle that you need while maintaining a gap between the table and the sanding belt. I find that when I tightened the right-side locking handle, it pulls the table toward the belt. I don't use the belt sander at other that 90 degrees too often, so I don't expect this to be a big deal for me. The disc sander work surface on the other hand is a breeze to adjust. There's an angle indicator on the table, so once the index is set to zero for perpendicular, moving to any other angle is a snap....
The 3/4 hp motor has yet to bog down on me. It seems adequately beefy so far.
I think this is a great sander. I've considered spending some money on Jet's larger sander and others in that class and was also considering other brands with lower priced units ... but when Jet re-released this machine, it didn't take long for me to make up my mind. As I use the sander more, I'll add more comments, but I expect to be very happy with my purchase and expect most other woodworkers would be happy as well.

The Jet 708599 belt sander is a well built machine that any shop would be proud to own. It is a big unit and heavy so call up the boys to help get it out of the box. I use mine for mostly metal working although the manual says it isn't intended to be used for metal.I wired mine for 240 volt, easy to do and the manual is good at showing how it's done.Plenty of power and smooth.I built my own stand from 4x4s and 3/4" plywood as the metal one looked a bit flimsy for me.The tables are machined cast, heavy duty along with everything else for sure.If you're looking for a belt sander this IS the unit you seek...
I purchased this sander about two months ago from Tool Crib to replace a Sears's stationary sander that is 20 years old. Compared to my old sander this is one heck of a machine. Very heavy and solid. Much more powerful than the Sears sander it replaced.
I purchased this unit without knowing the horsepower of the motor since it wasn't mentioned in their description of the product.Once I received the unit I understood why, the grinder doesn't have enough horsepower to grind anything.The belt on the sander wouldn't stay on.I returned this item and have been waiting over 60 days for my refund because they claim nothing is wrong with the unit.The product, the company and the customer service leave a lot to be desired.
The item I received in NOT EVEN CLOSE to what is shown in the pictures, and it is broken to boot.The unit I received does NOT have a tilting belt sander - it is fixed in the horizontal position, and cannot be raised vertically, or to any other position in between.Instruction manual does not match unit sent, so many of the assembly steps are trial-and-error.
Delta SM500 4" x 6" Belt/Disc Sander
I bought this product over a month ago for my personal wood shop, so far it's been able to handle everything I throw at it. I really like the sanding length on the 4-inch belt, but it would be useful if the 6-Inch disc Sander was an 8-inch. (but I was able to manage around that).
This is a solid, smooth running machine with heavy duty castings and ample power.This unit runs smoother, and with less noise and vibration compared to the Delta 31-280.The 1725 RPM speed produces less burning on sensitive woods like cherry.

This tool is very impressive and not a toy as some others may be.If Jet keeps this type of quality in workmanship going and the costs down, the competition will be blown away.The first thing that impressed me was the weight.You will need two adults to get it out of the box and without a mobile base this unit will stay parked in the shop. The fininh was well done and it looks like a tool that will last a life time. Assembly was a snap and the instructions were well written.I could not believe how quiet this unit runs and without vibration !I also like the idea of one dust port for both ends of the tool. I have another Jet product and I noticed if there is anything I could say in the negative sense is the 90/45 deg. stops could be better. This would not change my mind about the unit ,it's just an observation that needs a mention.I really don't think anyone would be dissapointed with the purchase of this one ! Good Job Jet!
I researched spindle sanders for about a week or so before making a decision to buy the Ridgid EB4424. I liked the idea that it is "multi-purpose" - functioning both as a spindle sander and a belt sander with a tilt table. I couldn't find anything else that offered all the features that the Rigid does, and the $250 price seemed too good to be true (most other spindle sanders cost more, sometimes MUCH more, but with fewer features). I almost didn't buy it because of the low price (made me somewhat suspicious). However, I have other Ridgid products and they have been very reliable.

I had always wanted a combination belt/disc sander for its versatility and convenience, yet never seemed to want to spend the money to get one.When I saw this little machine come on the market, at this price, I thought it was the perfect solution for my small home shop.Besides price, this unit has a lot going for it.It is compact yet sturdy (the base is cast iron)
I bought this sander to replace my 30+ year old Craftsman belt sander. This sander is very powerful (3/4 horse) and runs great. The sanding belt tracking is very easy to set. The belt tension release lever is a very nice feature. The 10" disk wheel is a good size for most of the work that I do.I recommend the stand that is sold separately.Overall, a very solid machine. I contacted customer service to order spare parts and received prompt courteous service.
Good choice! Switching belts is easy yet they are held securely, and adjusting the belt tracking is simple and easy. The whole top of the belt sander is unobstructed by the disc sander, although I wish they still had a work support for the belt as well as for the disc, as did earlier models. The disc is more than satisfactory, I use it almost daily for chamfering routed/sawn pieces. The miter gauge worked great too, the few times I've used it. Only once so far have I needed to change the angle of the work support itself from the normal position, and that went without a hitch. That's something I don't need often, but when you do, it's invaluable. It has sufficient power for every job I've given it, although it doesn't have a lot in reserve. All in all, this sander will compare well to any in its class. I recommend it for any basement/garage workshop with low to moderate usage.
This is a pretty good benchtop sander.It arrived in good condition without any damage or missing parts.Assembled and adjusted in about 15 minutes.The only fault I could find with the unit is that there is a slight wobble to the wheel that I could not get rid of.Overall, I am happy with the purchase and would recommend to others.
