Grizzly G1276 Combination Sander 6" x 48" Belt 12" Disc 1725 RPM Review

Grizzly G1276 Combination Sander 6' x 48' Belt 12' Disc 1725 RPMThis is a solid, smooth running machine with heavy duty castings and ample power. This unit runs smoother, and with less noise and vibration compared to the Delta 31-280.The 1725 RPM speed produces less burning on sensitive woods like cherry.
Fit and finish is very good.A notch below the Delta, but outstanding considering the price.Dust collection is also very good, but you will need to improvise an adapter for the disc side.
Two issues make this less than a 5 star review:
1) The belt tracking is finicky.Once set it is stable, but it can be a bear to get there.
2) The table for the belt is mounted too high.Only 8.5 inches of the 14.5 inch platen are usable.

SHOP FOX W1712 1.5-Horsepower 6/12-Inch Combination Disc and Belt Sander Review

SHOP FOX W1712 1.5-Horsepower 6/12 inch Combination Disc and Belt SanderThis machine has been a disappointment, the only reason I give it a second star is that it hasn't blown up (yet)

1. The enclosed cabinet is a waste of space. I am used to having a door or something to place spare belts, adjustment tools etc. in this space. This cabinet has no such access.

2. The tracking adjustment is not user friendly and is manufactured with very loose tolerances that throw off the adjustment by simply locking it into position.

3. Due to the poor tracking, the sanding belt has walked to the side and cut up the plactic guards and duct collection cowl which have subsequently been thrown away.

4. The table adjustments lock downs are made from plastic which I feel is inadequate to allow the clamping force necessary to ensure the table stays true and square. One of the locking levers has broken on me.

5. The on/off switch is unreliable. Sometimes it needs a little exercising to get it to function and recently it has stayed in the run position requiring me to shut it down by unplugging it.

6. The drive drum on the belt sander portion worked loose once and I took it apart to get it working again. The attachment was a set screw on the pulley locking it to a flat ground onto the drive shaft. I feel that to tranfer the torque of a 1-1/2 HP motor, a more substantial connection is appropriate (keyed, splines, etc.)

I consider myself a midlevel hobbyist and bought this to replace my Delta that was lost in the Katrina flood. I have used this sander approximately 80 hours making a complete set of kitchen cabinets and various other smaller projects.

I currently would not consider Shop Fox for future purchases based on my experience with this sander.

Grizzly G0547 Combo Sander 4" x 36" Belt 6" Disc Review

Grizzly G0547 Combo Sander 4' x 36' Belt 6' DiscI had always wanted a combination belt/disc sander for its versatility and convenience, yet never seemed to want to spend the money to get one. When I saw this little machine come on the market, at this price, I thought it was the perfect solution for my small home shop.Besides price, this unit has a lot going for it.It is compact yet sturdy (the base is cast iron)
and for its size, it is powerful enough to do anything I would ask of it.As an added bonus, the manual provided by Grizzly was absolutely excellent! All of the set-up instructions were clear and accurate. Now for the downside...I realize that you get what you pay for, but there are several things which bother me about this tool.First, the "miter gauge" included for use with the disc sanding table is a joke.It is cheaply made and mine is not square.Second, the motor turns the sanding surfaces at 3450 rpms. This is way too fast for a lot of the sanding you may want to do with this machine. If you research it a bit you will find that most of the better quality belt/disc combo machines have motors that turn at 1725 rpms.
All in all, this little machine is worth the price but I can't help thinking that with a little more time in the design phase, this tool could have been great. If you are on a very tight budget and find yourself in need of this type of sander then don't hesitate.Otherwise, spend a little more and get some high end features.

RIKON 50-120 6-by-48-Inch Belt 10-Inch Disc Sander Review

RIKON 50-120 6-by-48 inch Belt 10 inch Disc SanderI bought this sander to replace my 30+ year old Craftsman belt sander. This sander is very powerful (3/4 horse) and runs great. The sanding belt tracking is very easy to set. The belt tension release lever is a very nice feature. The 10" disk wheel is a good size for most of the work that I do.I recommend the stand that is sold separately.Overall, a very solid machine. I contacted customer service to order spare parts and received prompt courteous service.

Rikon 50-110 Belt and Disc Sander, 4-Inch by 36-Inch Review

Rikon 50-110 Belt and Disc Sander, 4 inch by 36 inchGood choice! Switching belts is easy yet they are held securely, and adjusting the belt tracking is simple and easy. The whole top of the belt sander is unobstructed by the disc sander, although I wish they still had a work support for the belt as well as for the disc, as did earlier models. The disc is more than satisfactory, I use it almost daily for chamfering routed/sawn pieces. The miter gauge worked great too, the few times I've used it. Only once so far have I needed to change the angle of the work support itself from the normal position, and that went without a hitch. That's something I don't need often, but when you do, it's invaluable. It has sufficient power for every job I've given it, although it doesn't have a lot in reserve. All in all, this sander will compare well to any in its class. I recommend it for any basement/garage workshop with low to moderate usage.
